Top U.S. hip-hop producer, Dallas Austin has pleaded guilty to carrying cocaine at a United Arab Emirates court. Austin who has worked with several stars including Michael Jackson was arrested in Dubai on May 19.
Police found him with more than 1.26 grams of the drug along with other illegal possessions at the Dubai airport.
He was arrested while on his way to celebrate beauty model Naomi Campbell's birthday. "I'm guilty, but it was a mistake," Austin told the court. "I didn't realize I had the drugs with me and I didn't intend to use them here in the UAE."
If convicted, Austin could be sentenced to more than four years imprisonment. The Dubai Court of First Instance would announce its verdict on Tuesday. The hip-hop producer appeared in court in a white shirt and jeans.
The local punishment for drug trafficking could include death penalty. However, judges scarcely pick that option. For foreigners, a jail term is followed by deportation. Reports say the Gulf state is a busy junction for traffickers who smuggle drugs between Europe and Asia.
