NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Katie Couric on Wednesday announced she is leaving NBC's "Today" show to join rival CBS and become the first woman sole anchor of a major U.S. network evening newscast.
"I wanted to tell all of you out there who have watched the show for the past 15 years that after listening to my heart and my gut -- two things that have served me pretty well in the past -- I've decided I'll be leaving 'Today' at the end of May," she said, announcing her departure at the beginning of Wednesday's "Today." "I really feel as if we've become friends through the years."
She added, "Thank you for 15 great years."
Couric, 49, has agreed to replace veteran CBS News correspondent Bob Schieffer in the CBS Evening News anchor chair he assumed on a temporary basis in March last year after Dan Rather stepped down.
