Ebay Won't Sell Animals

A plan by eBay Inc. to allow live pets to be listed for sale on the online marketplace has been suspended after eliciting a barrage of criticism from the company's users.

The plan, revealed by an eBay manager on a message board Friday afternoon, was to create a live pets classifieds category early next year.

But after more than 2,000 users chimed in with feedback, most of it critical, eBay changed course. On Monday, the San Jose company said that it no longer intends to allow pets to be listed on the Web site.

Under the plan that was being explored, breeders could have put up listings, paying only a listing fee. Animal shelters could have listed pets for adoption for free.

For years, eBay has prohibited the sale of live animals, except for fish and snails, on its Web site. Violators could have their listings canceled and their accounts suspended.

I like the idea. Why not allow pets to be sold on ebay? It's just the same as selling them in ad papers.

I dont mean send them in the post or anything -- but i really want a certain bread of dog, very hard to find. If this was allowed on ebay, i'd be willing to travel anywhere in the UK to get one. And there would be more chance of finding a place that sells them

Bad move by ebay stopping this. Let people complain. People would still use the service.

Cheers.

well what if people sold sick animals, loaded them with drugs, etc. for illegal manners.

The you would leave them bad eBay feedback... just as you would for any other item!

Just because you can buy them on eBay doesn't mean that eBay would condone, support or encourage that behavior? Surely it's the individual who is at fault?

How is it any different from ads in the paper? or a pet shop even?
